Uncovering Hidden History: The Freedmen’s Bureau Records (African American)

The Civil War profoundly impacted many lives from Delaware to Texas. Freedmen’s Bureau records are a treasure trove of information, extending beyond the experiences of freed enslaved to the families of Confederate soldiers who were wounded or killed in action, and others. They also provide data about ALL post-war impoverished Southerners. Those listed may have received rations, been declared destitute, sought to reclaim abandoned land, be party to a contract, attend school, be admitted to a hospital, & more. You might also find personal correspondence and transportation records to help unlock your family history.
